What the Heck Are Those Buttons?

It seems we receive at least one question per day about the buttons we have on the top left corner of our site. Most people tell us they see them popping up on most of the sites they visit, but they don’t know what they are. So today, we take a brief technical diversion to show you how they can help you get more out of both this blog and many others that you may read.

While many of our readers follow this blog on the Web site you are looking at right now, some choose to have our posts automatically sent to an RSS Reader. RSS stands for “Really Simple Syndication” and it’s an easy way to gather up a bunch of content of your choosing in one place. All you need to do is set up a free RSS Reader (Google Reader is popular and simple to use) and then whenever you see the orange RSS symbol, you can click on it to automatically add content from that site to your reader. This is called subscribing to a feed, and now you can read all of your feeds in one convenient place instead of skipping from one site to the next. If you use a personalized homepage service like iGoogle or Pageflakes you can add the RSS feeds to one of the boxes on that page too.

Like all feeds, it’s free and you can unsubscribe at any time with just one click.

It certainly seems that Twitter is all everyone is talking about these days, from Oprah to CNN. With well over 30 million users, Twitter certainly is wildly popular, but it can be confusing and intimidating for new users. Twitter is basically a way to communicate with others. You pick people to follow and you’ll see all of the messages they post (which must be 140 characters or less.) You can build your own following of friends and fans as well. Twitter is a great way get answers to questions, see what your favorite celebrities have to say, and keep in touch with friends. It gives you an amazing real-time view of the what the world is talking about, though it can sometimes feel like you are drinking from a fire-hose of information too.

We recommend that you get started by picking just 10 – 20 people to follow. We recently published a list of the 20 Best Twitter Users to Follow for Money Tips and profile a single user you might want follow every Tuesday. From there, you’ll soon start to find friends, bloggers, companies and celebrities that also have something interesting to say. Once again, you can follow them with just one click of your mouse and unfollow them just as quickly if you later change your mind. Start making a few posts of your own (”Tweets”) and soon you’ll be part of the conversation too.

Of course, we invite you to follow us too. We provide a few posts today with links to news and articles you might find interesting as well as brief thoughts that don’t warrant a full blog post of their own.
