Many of us like to give extra this time of year– and many charities need it. But how do you know if a charity really is doing good? There are a few online resources available that will help you make sure every dollar you spend is helping the cause you want to support.
GuideStar
GuideStar believes that charities should be completely transparent. That’s why they’re dedicated to researching non-profits and reporting their results. If you want to research a charity, you can access important information here for free and feel good about where your money is going.
Give Well
GiveWell.net is a non-profit charity evaluator that does independent, in depth research with the ultimate goal of making sure your dollars are accomplishing as much good as possible. You can review hundreds of charities that have gone under the watchful eye of Give Well. Very few charities get many stars under the Give Well standards.
Charity Navigator
Charity Navigator calls itself America’s premier independent charity evaluator. The organization has thoroughly checked out the financial health of more than 5,000 of America’s largest charities. You’ll find out how much of each dollar you donate is actually going to the cause– and how much is being spent on the leaders’ salaries.
Charity Ratings Watchdog
Charity Ratings Watchdog believes you should give to a good charity, not just a good cause. They believe not all charities are well managed which can mean that your money isn’t being allocated wisely. Charity Ratings Watchdog gives each charity a letter grade depending on how they’re spending their money.
