I’ve saved $30 over the past three days on two purchases. Not because I clipped coupons and not because I shopped sales. I got those discounts just because I asked! Here’s how it works:
Case Study #1: Eyeglasses
My husband and I heard a loud crash in the middle of the night last week. It just happened to be the day we discovered I left the front door unlocked for a few hours in the afternoon. So of course we thought someone must have got in, hid and decided to rob us in the middle of the night. Without his contacts, my husband is nearly blind. He doesn’t have glasses so in order to investigate the crash he had to stumble his way to the bathroom to put in his contacts. Thankfully there was no burglar, but it made us realize he needed glasses. We went to the local optometrist’s office. We had about $220 in our HSA account and the glasses came to just under $300. We simply said, “Is that the best price you can do?” and the helpful lady asked if we have AAA? We did which ended up saving us an additional 5%. On a $300 purchase that’s a $15 savings just by saying eight little words.
Case Study #2: Running Shoes
Last night we went up the street to our local athletic store so I could get some new running shoes. I buy all of my running shoes at this store. So when the pair I found was $99 (Yikes!) I told them that I was a loyal customer and last time I got a discount. Then I asked if they could do the same this time. The answer was yes and I saved 15%.
So whether you’re at a nationwide chain (like the eyeglass shop) or a local store (like the athletic store) just ask for a discount!
