President Obama said the country “can’t go back to a bubble economy, an economy based on reckless spending and spending beyond our means.”
Can you tell at a glance what is wrong with the statement?
Spending beyond our means is what got most people, companies and even governments into trouble over the last few years. This trouble has culminated in the current economic crisis that we – as a country – are facing.
It is a good idea to spend wisely, to not get more debt that you can COMFORTABLY afford. The problem with the statement made by President Obama is that he is using it as a means to justify Congress passing his $3.6 Trillion budget.
Maybe I missed something along the way but I seem to recall that the United States is currently in debt itself. It has spent more than it could afford. Now the President is proposing that we increase that spending in order to help the economy and keep people from over spending.
It reminds me of the woman who told her husband she had saved him a $100 at the store that day. It seems that she bought yet another pair of shoes that she didn’t need for just $100. They were on sale for half price which in her mind meant she had saved $100. Forget that she had spent $100 that she didn’t have to spend.
It is time for the United States government and President Obama to walk what they preach. Reckless spending and spending beyond our means must stop now!
