Have you ever wondered what the pizza guy thinks about you answering the door in your underwear? Then you need to follow @deliverawaydebt, our next Twitter Tuesday Profile. He goes by Jeff and he’s a husband and father to two kids, a nearly-three-year-old boy and a 15 month old girl. By day Jeff is an engineer/maintenance foreman for General Motors in Michigan. But at night he’s a pizza delivery man on a mission to pay off debt. He blogs about his experiences at DeliverAwayDebt.com.
OODC: How did you get started blogging and tweeting?
@DeliverAwayDebt: I started to tweet the funny stories that happened during my shifts as a pizza delivery driver. People say the strangest things to the pizza guy. After tweeting for 2 months J. Money from @BudgetsAreSexy and @BrianScheur from MyNextBuck.com said I should start writing about my adventures. DeliverAwayDebt was born on Oct 1, 2009.
OODC:What do you typically tweet about?
@DeliverAwayDebt: During the week I tweet about the personal finance world. On the weekends I tweet about delivering pizzas. If you choose to follow me here are some tips to know about my lingo:
3/20 means that I got a $3 tip on a $20 order
STIFFY ALERT means that I got a tip lower than $1. A stiffy alert is always followed by a remark about the customer. Here are a couple of examples
“STIFFY ALERT I sure hope you don’t get those chicken wings stuck in that gap tooth.”
“STIFFY ALERT: if you’re going to stiff me don’t engage in small talk with me. I don’t care!”
OODC:When and why did you start delivering pizzas?
@DeliverAwayDebt: I started in May of 2008 in an effort to replace the lost hazard pay from working in China. I worked for almost a year delivering before I realized that I wasn’t making any progress on my debt. I wasted over $10,000 in money on my current lifestyle. My wife and I hired a Financial Coach in April 2009, who got us to budget and save all the pizza money for debt repayment.
OODC:How much money do you typically make and what’s the most you’ve made in one night delivering pizza?
@DeliverAwayDebt: Over the last 5 months I’ve averaged $19.98 per hour delivering pizzas. I work 22 hours per week and bring home over $1,500 per month. If you factor in gas and such it’s just over $18.00 per hour. On my best night for tips I walked away with $238.
OODC:How big of a role has delivering pizzas played in your ability to pay off debt?
@DeliverAwayDebt: A HUGE one. Delivering has brought in the extra income we needed to gain traction to pay down the debt. I recommend the job to anyone looking for some extra income.
OODC:Who are some of your favorite money tweeters?
@DeliverAwayDebt: @Moneyfunk because Christine and I carry the same amount of debt and she’s one of my debt buddies.
@enemyofdebt because Brad and I have a ton in common and he once delivered pizzas too.
@Financialsamura because the Samurai is usually up late on my delivery nights and he’s an all around cool dude.
@Budgetsaresexy because he is always making me laugh.
The list can go on and on because my Twitter stream is full of the best people in the world. The personal finance community is awesome on Twitter.
